The 6-day Machame Route is an extended version of the classic route, offering an extra day for acclimatization at Horombo Hut before the summit push. This additional rest day significantly increases your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully. The route is known as the "Coca-Cola Route" and offers comfortable mountain huts with bunk beds.
The extra day allows your body to adapt to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. You'll spend a full day at Horombo Hut, exploring the surrounding area and enjoying the stunning views of Kibo Peak before your summit attempt.
After breakfast at your hotel, transfer to Marangu Gate. Register and begin your trek through the lush rainforest. Arrive at Mandara Hut in the late afternoon.
Ascend through the heath and moorland zone. Giant lobelias and groundsels line the trail. Arrive at Horombo Hut with stunning views of Kibo Peak.
Rest day at Horombo Hut. Take a short hike to Mawenzi Tarn for acclimatization. Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and rest. This extra day dramatically increases summit success rates.
Continue ascending to Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt. The trail passes through the alpine desert zone. Arrive in the early afternoon and rest early.
Midnight start for your summit attempt. Hike to Gilman's Point and then to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating, descend to Horombo Hut for the night.
Final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi for celebration!
