The 7-day Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. This route offers a unique and less crowded experience compared to other routes. The terrain is diverse, starting from farmland and ascending through rainforest, heath, moorland, and alpine desert to reach Uhuru Peak.
The Rongai Route is known for its scenic beauty and excellent success rates due to the gradual ascent profile. The 7-day itinerary includes an extra day for acclimatization at Kibo Hut, significantly increasing your chances of a successful summit. Our experienced guides will ensure your safety throughout this memorable journey to the roof of Africa.
After breakfast at your hotel, you'll be transferred to Rongai Gate for registration. Begin your trek through the farmland and then into the rainforest zone. The trail is relatively gentle as you make your way to Simba Camp. Arrive in the late afternoon and set up camp.
Continue your ascent through the rainforest. The trail becomes steeper as you exit the forest and enter the heath and moorland zone. You'll see giant lobelias and groundsels. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp in the late afternoon.
Continue ascending to Mawenzi Tarn, situated at the base of Mawenzi Peak. The trail passes through the alpine desert zone with its harsh conditions and sparse vegetation. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn in the early afternoon. This is a shorter day allowing for proper acclimatization.
Today is an acclimatization day. Take short walks around Mawenzi Tarn to help your body adjust to the altitude. Enjoy the stunning views of Mawenzi Peak. Rest and prepare for tomorrow's climb to Kibo Hut.
Continue ascending to Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt. The trail passes through the alpine desert zone. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. Rest and sleep early in preparation for your midnight summit push.
Wake up at midnight and begin your summit attempt. Hike in darkness through the night to Gilman's Point and then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and then transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb!
